ICCS Barbecue
Centenary Methodist Church/ Wesley House, Leeson Park, Dublin 6.
Our Annual Barbecue will be held at same venue as last year. We should
like to thank the authorities of the Centenary Methodist Church who have
generously provided the facilities of Wesley House for us, at this very convenient
location. There is shelter in case of rain, some chairs, and we have permission to
make tea or coffee on the premises.
(Dartmouth Rd. end, beside Christ Church)
The society will provide charcoal
and some cooking stoves,
but additional barbecue cookers
are welcome, as are additional
folding (camp) chairs or folding
tables.
Please contact Hon. Secretary
(Nora McDowell 4971505)
if you intend to bring a cooker.
Members are welcome to bring friends. Members must bring their own food and
drinks. We will be inviting the Chinese Ambassador and the staff of the Embassy
and members of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association, so this should
again provide an enjoyable social occasion, relaxed and informal.
(please note special date - 5th Wednesday, not 4th)
"Chinese Space Launch Centre"
a talk by Cindy Liu
Ms Cindy Liu, a computer science lecturer in DIT and chairman of the Association of Chinese Professionals in Ireland,
will speak to the ICCS about the Satellite Launching Centre in China, where she worked with other rocket scientists.
Cindy was in the first generation of the team of the communication satellite launching programme in China.
Since she left the centre in 1986 she visited the centre many times so that she can offer topical information
including an account of the most recent launchings of "Chang-E" I and II communication satellites.
Chang-E, the Moon Goddess, features in an ancient Chinese myth, which Cindy will tell us about in her talk.
As this coincides with Moon Festival we'll have a small celebration after the talk.
OCTOBER
Wednesday 27th, 8.00 pm
"The Asia Market, Drury Street"
a talk by Eva Pau
Eva's father, Howard, started the Asia Market in 1981, and tonight we will learn something of its history (and future plans).
It is now one of the largest suppliers of fresh, frozen, dried and canned goods of oriental produce to the restaurant,
catering and retail trade in Ireland through its dedicated transport fleet base at its warehouse near the Red Cow Inn, Dublin.
Eva, who has worked in Hong Kong for some years and travelled extensively in East Asia, gave during this talk
her impressions of the cuisines of some of the countries she has been in. For each she gave a few recommendations
of things to try.
It was suggested that it would be helpful to put these recommendations on our web site, so
HERE
they are.
NOVEMBER
"Chinaportal and the Shanghai Exhibition"
a talk by Ken Duggan .
Ken Duggan is one of the directors of Chinaportal Limited,
which provides a consultancy service to European and Chinese clients, especially in
the sourcing and importation into Ireland of products direct from China.
Ken has kindly agreed, at very short notice, to talk about his organisation,
and to give us an outline of his experiences and impressions of the
Shanghai Expo.
(In 2005 Ken ventured into a project with a Chinese business partner in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, near Shanghai.
They established from scratch an Irish Pub, the Shamrock Irish Bar, targeting the growing
Chinese professional market and the expatriate community working in Singapore Industrial Park (SIP) in Suzhou.
This venture serves one of the largest Industrial Zones in China and the Pub is now
firmly established as the market leader in Suzhou.
Ken has a unique practical experience of Chinese business culture and ethos. He has invested
in the Chinese property market, and has recently been successfully involved
in sourcing a range of products in China
on behalf of Irish and international clients of Chinaportal.
You can find out more about Ken Duggan and Chinaportal
