BACHELOR OF SOCIAL SCIENCE
Message from the Dean of Social Science
I believe the Bachelor of Social Science degree is the ideal choice for those with a keen interest in people, society and social issues. There is a wide variety of careers open to social scientists and this degree gives students the opportunity to study a range of areas in the social sciences, such as social work, environmental studies and criminology, which can build up into a number of career options. In this way, the Social Science degree suits both those with a clear idea of the area in which they would like to work and those who are less certain about a particular career at the outset. Regardless of where it takes you, a Social Science degree gives you a greater understanding of people in a social context and will always be of benefit in any work situation and more generally in life.
My own background is in social work and social policy. Having completed a Social Science degree, I went on to do a Master's in Social Work. I subsequently worked as a social worker in a variety of settings such as general hospital and with people who have a physical disability; I also managed a community playgroup. I am now involved in teaching social policy, in training professional social workers and researching the psychosocial effects of serious illness on patients and their families.
As Dean of Social Science, my main aim is to support students in reaching their potential and in choosing the right study and career path for themselves. Our Social Science degree pathways are designed to offer the widest possible choice to students and there are no limitations on places in any of the pathways chosen. In other words, any student who enters the Bachelor of Social Science degree and completes the requisite foundation modules in their first year can have a place in the pathway of their choice.
Professor Suzanne Quin, Dean of Social Science
