Q: How do I apply for membership?
A: Just download the form from the website. Alternatively, email adastraeliteathlete@ucd.ie. Applications must be submitted no later than 5.00 p.m. on 31st January. Please note that late applications will not be accepted.
Q: How many scholarships are there?
There is no 'fixed' quantity. Seventeen athletes joined in 2009-2010, seventeen joined in 2010-2011, and 25 athletes were admitted in 2012. Applicants who meet the criteria for admission will be shortlisted and interviewed. Final decisions on the award of Elite Athlete scholarships are the responsibility of the interviewing panel.
What are the main sports?
Rugby, hockey, soccer, GAA, rowing and athletics are our priority sports. We also have a Modern Pentathlete, a sailor, three swimmers, two golfers and two rowers. However, applications from other sports are welcome and will be given full consideration.
Q: How many athletes are in the programme?
A: We have a total of 28 athletes in the programme. This is made up of 11 athletes who joined in 2009-2010 and 17 athletes who joined in September 2011.
Q: How many athletes are there in each sport?
The UCD Ad Astra Academy, includes two Olympians – a modern pentathlete and a sailor, ten GAA scholars, eleven Ireland Rugby scholars, three of whom were Ireland u20 Six Nations Rugby squad members, and one of whom holds three Heinekin Cup medals, six members of the national womens' senior Hockey squad, two World Championship rowers, three members of the Irish womens' Soccer squad, six members of the UCD Mens' Soccer team – one of whom is a member of the Senior Irish team, four world-class middle distance athletes, two golfers and three swimmers.
Q: If I have my own coach, can I continue to work with him/her?
A: Yes, of course, but we encourage good lines of communication with our own staff to ensure athlete welfare throughout your time at UCD.
