This course sets out to examine the historical development of the documentary film, setting current trends, such as the proliferation of 24 hour news channels and increasing popularity of reality TV shows, within a historical, cultural and aesthetic lineage. This is done by analysing the evolution of the documentary film through an examination of certain important national and stylistic movements from the mainstream to the avant-garde.

Tutor Details
Egan, Eric (BSc, MA PhD) has taught film studies in both England and Ireland and has written extensively on world cinema and cinema in Iran. He is the author of “The Films of Makhmalbaf” (Washington DC: Mage 2005) and is currently contributing to the forthcoming book “Film and Politics in the Middle East” (Texas University Press: 2009).
