ART APPRECIATION
An Introduction to Impressionism
AUTUMN AN151
Friday
Jessica Fahy
Impressionism was a fascinating and important art movement which began in 19th century France. The development, responses to and influence of this distinctive style of painting is the focus of this course. Each week a different aspect will be examined with detailed analysis of individual responses of different artists to the theories of the movement. The main artists to be discussed are Cézanne, Degas, Manet, Monet and Renoir. An essential element is a visit to the Hugh Lane Gallery to explore the wonderful collection French Impressionist works there as well as tracing the style in Irish art.
The topics to be considered during this course will range from the origin of the movement to the reasons behind the controversy that surrounded the first exhibitions to the affect they had on the art world at the time as well as including an examination of the choices of subject matter, technique, materials and display. While the emphasis will be on a group of French painters who worked between around 1860 and 1900, the wider affect of their influence will also be considered.
A further area of interest will be a look at the possible reasons for the dramatic change from the original outraged at this style of painting to the subsequent immense popularity of the works that today attract record numbers to exhibitions and incredible prices at auction.
