An Introduction to Western Sculpture

TERM 3: FOCUS ON AN344

This survey course will track the evolution of Western sculpture from antiquity to the present day. Each week a different era and its stylistic developments will be discussed as well as issues relating to display, technique, materials and subject matter. The theories of sculptural aesthetics will be addressed along with important examples of individual artists including Michelangelo, Bernini, Canova and Rodin. The final class will be a guided tour of the UCD sculpture walk to allow students to consider modern sculpture in the light of the past practices and the history of this intriguing genre of the visuals arts. Sculpture as an every changing art form will be examined starting with examples from ancient Greek and Roman world, through the Christian devotional works of the Medieval era onto the influence of humanism on Renaissance and Mannerist art to the drama of the Baroque, the reason of the Neo-Classical period and well into the remarkable new approaches in the modern age. This course will encompass a wide range of theories and movement relating to the plastic arts and consequently present an overview of the History of Western civilisation and art.

Who is the course for?

This course is for anyone interested in art history and in particular Western sculpture. As it is a wide ranging survey course it would be a good introduction to Western art in general from Antiquity to the present day.
