Hosted by the National Library of Ireland and benefiting from the use of its collections, this course will explore the events surrounding the 1916 Rising. Lectures will reveal the context, course and aftermath of the rebellion as well as issues surrounding its interpretation and commemoration. Manuscript material, newspapers, ephemera and the Library’s photographic collection will elucidate the subject for participants. The course will conclude with a field trip to the Pearse Museum in St. Enda’s Park, Rathfarnham.

Tutor Details
Conor Mulvagh has just completed a PhD in the School of History and Archives: Sit, act, and vote: the political evolution of the Irish Parliamentary Party at Westminster, 1900-1918 (supervisors: Professors Diarmaid Ferriter and Michael Laffan) he has previously researched, published and taught on various aspects of Irish and international history including the Catholic Church, political printing, paramilitarism in Ireland, and commemoration. He holds a Masters from Trinity College Dublin.

There is a vast literature on the history of the Easter Rising. Several of the texts below could have could easily have been replaced by titles that have been excluded. Many of these titles are available in public libraries as well as in the National Library and you are encouraged to stray beyond this list and to browse in the library stacks and catalogues.
