Improving Your Conversational Irish: 1

AUTUMN UN103

Wednesday

Tutor: Deirdre Moran

This course will use RTÉ's highly popular multimedia Irish language course, Turas Teanga, as its basis for improving your conversational Irish. The emphasis will be on developing speaking and listening skills that will be useful and reflect everyday usage. Each class will involve a mixture of listening, reading and oral exercises with the main emphasis being on speaking the language in a friendly and encouraging atmosphere. Grammar will be touched on but in the context of the spoken language. It is intended for those who studied Irish at school, but may have had few opportunities to use it in recent years.

We will cover basic topics, including family, pastimes, where we live, and also discuss more abstract topics like culture and politics which will give you the opportunity to build and develop your vocabulary and fluency. The class will be entirely interactive with all of the activities carried out in either groups or pairs. Our emphasis will be developing the ability to communicate.

Each week we will pick a subject and centre the class around the topic with relevant reading, vocabulary, and listening. Any relevant grammar will also be studied in a practical way. However, the main bulk of the class will be spent on discussion work where we will develop our communication skills in a friendly and encouraging environment.
