Access to Arts and Human Sciences
Certificate in Foundation Level Studies
This course is designed to prepare adults, who may not have formal qualifications, for successful study at university. The course is particularly suited for those who aim to study in the area of the Arts and Human Sciences.

Access to Arts and Human Sciences aims to:
- Equip students with the skills that they will need to engage in an undergraduate course
- Introduce students to the methods of study, writing and research required for successful participation in higher education
- Prepare students to compete for entry to third level and to make informed choices about further study
- Increase students' self-confidence in their ability to advance within third level education
- Offer students the opportunity to experience the fulfilment that can be gained from learning in an academic setting
Course Structure
The course consists of four parts: Academic Subjects, Study Skills/Writing Skills and Educational Guidance Tutorials and I.T. Skills.
Academic Subjects
Students will take two subjects, one in each semester. English Literature, History, Sociology, Archaeology and Politics are available, depending on venue.

Student Support
Tutorial support is given on all aspects of the course particularly on essay writing, assignments and written exams.
Course Assessment
Students will be expected to submit an essay and complete an exam at the end of each semester. They will also submit a summary of a learning journal in each semester. On successful completion of the programme, students will be awarded a National University of Ireland Foundation Level Certificate. 80% minimum attendance is required.

Entry requirements
There are no formal educational entry requirements. Applicants may apply using prior educational qualifications or life experience. Evidence of recent prior learning is most relevant in an application. Adult learners are invited to submit their life experience and individual strengths as evidence of their suitability. Candidates are required to complete an application form, attend an interview and be assessed on a sample of written work. All applicants must be over the age of 22 on 1st January 2012.

Students who are registered as unemployed and/or in-receipt of one of the following payments: Job-seekers Benefit, Job-seekers Allowance or One-Parent Family Allowance may qualify for UCD Adult Education Access Programme 2012 – 13 Fees Scholarship Programme. Progression
Degree of Bachelor of Arts in UCD - DN500 (BA Full-time Day); DN501(BA Part-time day);Bachelor of Social Science in UCD (DN550),Students will be guaranteed a place if they:
- Obtain an average mark in excess of 60% in the overall course assessment
- Are eligible to apply on grounds of mature years
- Follow appropriate application procedures via the CAO
In addition, UCD School of Law welcomes applications from mature students and offers places to appropriately qualified applicants each year. The School of Law does not currently guarantee a place on its programmes for students who are mature applicants and who achieve an average mark of 60 % in the overall course assessments.
