One of the most common difficulties experienced by students coming to university for the first time is adjusting to new ways of study. You may think in September that essays, assignments and exams are a long way off but as UCD is semesterised and modularised with continuous assessment being a large component of your programme, you will have to start submitting work much earlier than you may think. It is therefore very important that you try to establish a study routine as early as possible.
You will probably be taking six modules in your first semester. These are independent of each other and you may encounter certain periods when you will need to submit a number of simultaneous assignments. If you find yourself snowed under, don’t let things get out of hand - come and talk to us!
In addition to the change of study and learning techniques you will experience, you will also have to be an independent learner. No one is going to be checking your homework and your attendance at classes is down to you. Getting into a disciplined, structured routine early in the year will allow you to pace yourself which will reduce stress and give you time to enjoy all the other things that UCD has to offer. The following are some guidelines to help you learn and study effectively.
