Students’ views - Agri-Environmental Sciences

Year 4 Agri-Environmental Sciences

"I liked the idea of having a job that combined lab and field work with report writing and meeting people. Since I was always interested in the environment and science I felt this programme would give me the job variety I wanted and plenty of opportunities.
The programme looks at the viable options to protect the environment using land and wildlife management techniques. It presents solutions that are suitable to farmers, industry and the public.
First year gives you an important foundation in science which you need for later modules. I particularly liked the modules in peatland management and diversity in the rural landscape, which brought together all different aspects of the environment.
The programme involves doing a lot of projects and presenting the findings. This is not only interesting but also really gives you confidence to present to a group of people.
Long term I want to work in ecological consultancy doing environmental impact assessments (EIAs). This degree programme has definitely delivered what I wanted. The staff are fantastic, 100% approachable and genuinely interested in your progress.
I acted as editor for Ceres, the yearbook produced by Ag Soc. This was great fun as you get to know everyone in each year. There is always stuff going on to get involved with through the society.
If you are interested in this area I would say go for it, this programme will open up a broad range of career opportunities and it is thoroughly enjoyable as well."

"I had to repeat my leaving to get here but I am really glad I did. UCD is the place to be and there are now so many opportunities in the environmental sector. This is a broad programme that gives you a solid foundation for your career.
I particularly enjoyed the project work which involved doing research and field work and then presenting the information back to your class. I feel I picked up many skills and learnt more this way, than taking lots of exams.
In year 3 I spent a semester in Michigan State University in the US. This was a great experience, I learnt a lot about world environmental issues and how other countries deal with environmental problems.
I also worked on an organic farm in the US as part of the Professional Work Experience requirement. My other placement was with Teagasc at their Grange research station helping on a research project."
