Event to mark Agricultural Science Association (ASA) 70th Anniversary takes place at University College Dublin

The Agricultural Science Association, founded in 1942, celebrated its 70th birthday this year. To mark this milestone, the ASA organised a special event in UCD, Belfield, Dublin 4 on Thursday 14 June.

The Agricultural Science Association, founded in 1942, celebrated its 70th birthday this year. To mark this milestone, the ASA organised a special event in UCD, Belfield, Dublin 4 on Thursday 14 June.

This very successful event and enjoyable evening, Chaired by ASA President and UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science staff member Dr Karina Pierce, also featured a series of addresses by UCD President Dr Hugh Brady, former Dean of Agriculture, Dr Joseph Mannion, a presentation to 94 year old Dr Harry Spain who served as ASA President in 1961-62 - 50 years ago.  Dr Spain was a prominent figure in Irish agriculture from 1948 until his retirement as deputy secretary of the Department of Agriculture in 1978, and presentations by two prominent ASA members. Mr Owen Killian, Chief Executive of Aryzta AG plc, provided his views on trends and prospects in global food demand while Matt Dempsey, Editor of the Irish Farmers Journal, highlighted the contribution of agricultural science graduates to the agri-food sector and the wider economy over the past seven decades as well as examining their role in a challenging and exciting future for the sector.

The Agricultural Science Association (ASA) is dedicated to enhancing the professional interests of all graduates in agriculture, food, forestry, horticulture and the environmental sciences.

Founded in 1942, the ASA is recognised by the government as a negotiating body. Members work in every aspect of agriculture, horticulture, forestry, food and rural development and have a proud record in policy development and in ensuring that expertise is utilised fully in the national interest.

The ASA is unique in bringing together professionals involved in every aspect of Irish life. Members are employed in government departments, research, advisory and consultancy work, universities, secondary schools, agricultural and horticultural colleges. In the business sphere, members at all levels of food and drink production, agri-inputs, banking, taxation, stock broking, property sales, advertising, marketing, farming and rural organisations, public relations and journalism.
