Opportunity Knocks for UCD Agriculture, Food Science and Human Nutrition final year students

Business Editor of the Irish Independent and UCD Agricultural Science Alumnus Ms Maeve Dineen provided the keynote address at UCD Agriculture, Food Science and Human Nutrition Careers Day which took place on the 14th February 2012 in the UCD Astra Hall.

Business Editor of the Irish Independent and UCD Agricultural Science Alumnus Ms Maeve Dineen provided the keynote address at UCD Agriculture, Food Science and Human Nutrition Careers Day which took place on the 14th February 2012 in the UCD Astra Hall. In her address to final year students enrolled to undergraduate programmes in the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science, Ms Dinnen reflected on her experience as a student on the Animal Science programme in UCD and on her very successful career since graduating from UCD in X. In her parting address, Ms Dineen quoted Oscar Wilde to reinforce that despite the very difficult economic climate we are experiencing in Ireland and globally presently, agriculture and food sectors are performing well and there are positive and optimistic projections for the sectors which will present competent and enthusiastic students with excellent opportunities and careers following graduation. Speaking to more than 300 students, Ms Dineen commented “ In the words of the great Irish writer and poet Oscar Wilde, we are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”

 

UCD Dean of Agriculture, Professor Alex Evans welcomed each of the 30 exhibitors in attendance, thanked them for their commitment in recruiting agricultural science graduates and congratulated them on their entrepreneurship and optimism at this difficult economic time.

Final year Animal Science student and Chair of the UCD Agricultural Science Careers Committee, Mr Padraig Kelly provided the final address of the day and thanked everyone who contributed to the success of the event. 

30 exhibitors attended the event with companies such as Kerry Group, Glanbia, Monaghan Mushrooms, Dawn Meats and Norbrook in attendance.  Careers Day was the culmination of a range of activities including: development of a graduate handbook; dedicated CV and Interview workshops; ASA Mock Interviews; Employer presentations; and a large Careers Exposition.
