International Comparative Rural Policy Studies Summer Institute hosted at UCD

The UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science, in conjunction with colleagues from the Departments of Geography and Economics in NUI Galway, and the Rural Economy and Development Programme at Teagasc have been hosting the 12th International Comparative Rural Policy Studies (ICRPS) Summer Institute (June 21st to July 4th 2015).
Dr James Breen and Dr Karen Keaveney of the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science are hosting the Summer Institute, and have brought together over 60 postgraduate students and faculty from 18 different universities in Mexico, the US, Canada, Italy, Spain, Norway, Scotland and Ireland.
Mairead McGuinness (MEP) attended the formal opening of the summer school at UCD and spoke to the group about the range of challenges facing rural communities and the agricultural sector in Europe.
Participants have met with local rural leaders in Kildare, Galway and Clare, and are using the opportunity to explore the future of rural communities in Ireland and internationally. Over the past two weeks, the group have been discussing a variety of issues including agricultural policy, rural community development, food waste, rural poverty, migration, and opportunities around rural enterprises.
