Research & Innovation
The College Agriculture, Food Scienece and Veterinary Medicine is a key contributor to three of UCD's four major research themes
Research Clusters
In addition to research undertaken in individual schools and at the College's teaching and research farm (Lyons Farm), many research questions require collaboration in a range of complementing disciplines; this has resulted in the formation of Research Institutes within UCD, where many researchers or groups jointly address complex questions that only multidisciplinary expertise can fully explore. The College is substantially involved in a number of state-of-the-art UCD's Research Institutes, and is also home to several Strategic Research Clusters and Research Groups , where good academia - industry links and interactions are an essential feature.
The College is home to 2 major nationally funded research programmes from SFI (the Reproductive Biology Research Cluster and the Irish Drug Delivery Network) under its Strategic Research Cluster initiative. Primary Investigators from the College are key participants in the UCD Conway Institute and the UCD Institute of Food and Health. These institutes provide a key mechanism for creating a critical mass in targeted research areas of cell and system biology, translational medicine, and food, nutrition and health.
InnovationIn order to meet the goals of the Irish Governments “Smart Economy” initiative and make a meaningful contribution to the UCD-Trinity Innovation Alliance, the College recognises the importance of assisting staff and students to bridge the gap between research and the commercial exploitation of research outputs. Over the years several researchers, affiliated with our schools, have translated their research into applicable products and know-how through licensing, patenting or through spin-out companies.
