Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. CAN I APPEAL MY PROVISIONAL GRADE?
A1. No. You can only appeal once your grades are final. No exceptions. Once provisional results have issued and you want to check if the result is correct, please contact your School.

Q2. CAN I APPEAL TO GET A HIGHER G.P.A.?
A2. No. Appealing because you are close to a higher grade or GPA is not a valid ground for an appeal. Any appeal made on this basis will be returned to you. Questions about your GPA and how it was calculated are to be addressed to your School / Programme Office.

Q3. HOW DO I APPEAL AN ASSESSMENT?
A3. To appeal an assessment, follow the procedures set out on http://www.ucd.ie/appeals. You must have valid grounds to appeal an assessment. Incomplete or invalid appeals will be returned. Please refer to the following webpage http://www.ucd.ie/appeals/exam_appeal.htm for further information. You have 30 days from the date your results are published in order to appeal a result and there is a 75 Euro fee per module. Please note that the Assessment Appeals Office cannot accept cash so please make your cheques/ postal orders payable to UCD Assessment Appeals Office.

Q4.WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I LODGE MY APPEAL DOCUMENTATION?
A4. If you have submitted a valid appeal, the Assessment Appeals Office send a copy of your appeal documentation to the Head of the relevant School, asking for a written response to the appeal. When a reply is received, a copy is sent to the student who then may wish to make a further submission. When the file is complete it is brought to the Academic Council Committee on Assessment Appeals (ACCAA)

Q5. WILL I HAVE TO APPEAR IN PERSON BEFORE THE COMMITTEE?
A5. No. Appeals are decided by examination of the written submissions of the appellant and the examiners.

Q6. HOW LONG DOES AN APPEAL TAKE?
A6. Typically, an appeal will take three months but some appeals can take much longer anywhere from six months up to a year, depending on the complexity of the appeal .

Q7. IF MY APPEAL IS SUCCESSFUL, DO I GET MY MONEY BACK?
A7. Yes.

Q8. HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO LODGE AN APPEAL?
A8. You have 30 days from the time your results become available on the website to lodge an appeal.

Q9. WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM OUT OF THE COUNTRY WHEN MY RESULTS BECOME AVAILABLE?
A9. If you are out of the country for the duration of the 30 day time limit, you must send an email to the Assessment Appeals Office ( assessment.appeals@ucd.ie) stating that you may wish to lodge an appeal on your return. The email must reach office within the 30 day time limit.

Q10. I HAVE MISSED THE DEADLINE, CAN I STILL APPEAL?
A10. If there were particular circumstances which prevented you from making your request within the 30 day period you may submit a waiver request form available from http://www.ucd.ie/appeals/pdfs/waiver_form.doc to the Academic Council Committee on Assessment Appeals (ACCAA). On the form you should state clearly the reasons why you were inhibited or prevented from making the appeal on time. The completed form must be sent by email to assessment.appeals@ucd.ie, the form will then be taken to a meeting of the ACCAA. If the Committee feels that the reasons are substantial, it may grant a waiver.

Please note that the following two reasons for missing the deadline will not be accepted:
• I did not know there was a deadline
• I did not know there was an appeals process

Q11. I WANT A RECHECK OF MY EXAM - WHAT DO I DO?
A11. This office no longer has a role for rechecks. You must contact your School if you want your results rechecked. A recheck is NOT an appeal. A recheck simply is a check to see if everything has been added up correctly and are all your exam scripts accounted for.

Q12. I WAS INFORMED IN WRITING BY YOUR OFFICE THAT MY APPEAL WAS SUCCESSFUL SO WHY HAS MY UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPT NOT CHANGED?
A12. Allow approximately two weeks from the time you get your letter before your academic record is amended. After that time, please contact the UCD Registry Assessment Office, Tierney Building, UCD; Ph : 716 5555.

Q13. HOW MANY APPEALS DO YOU HAVE AT THE MOMENT?
A13. We currently have approximately 150 appeals in progress.
