Biography:
| Aileen O'Gorman is a post-doctoral research fellow in the School of Applied Social Science. She holds a BA in European Studies from the University of Limerick; a MSc in Politics and Sociology from Birkbeck College, University of
London; and a PhD from the School of Health and Social Sciences, Middlesex University for a multi-site ethnographic and qualitative study - Drug Use and Social Exclusion: the development of heroin careers in risk environments. She has worked as a researcher in variety of university, government, media and community settings including the National Advisory Committee on Drugs (NACD), Ireland; the Centre for Urban and Community Research (CUCR); Goldsmiths College, University of London; the Drug Inidicators Project, Birkbeck College, Univerity of London; the Daily Telegraph, London; and Fatima Mansions, Dublin. She is author of a number of commissioned research studies, has published in international journals, and presented her work at national and international conferences. She is a member of the European Society for Social Drugs Research (ESSD); has provided drugs research training programmes in Ireland and Europe; has participated in a number of expert working groups for the EU Drugs Agency, the EMCDDA; and is a member of the editorial board of the international journal Drugs, Education, Prevention and Policy. |
Research Interests
| My research interests include drug use, drug markets and drugs and alcohol policies; inequality and
spatialised social exclusion; community development and community activism; research
methodologies and community/participatory research; urban policy and
regeneration.
Current research projects include: 1) Study of Drug Policy Advocacy Organisation in Europe - Principal Investigator of European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) funded research. 2) AAA-prevent - Effective Environmental Strategies for the Prevention of Alcohol Abuse among Adolescents in Europe. An EU 7th Framework Programme for Research study 3) From Boom to Dust - a drug trend study of cocaine use and cocaine markets during the Celtic Tiger era. 4) Changing Cities: Precarious urbanisms at the edge of the city/Villes en mutation: L'urbanisme précaire au bord de la Ville. An inter-institutional and inter-disciplinary European collaboration examining the dynamic interface between people, power and space in urban environments. 5) Drugs, inequality and risk environments an analysis of the situated meaning of drug use in social, economic and community contexts. 6) Progress and Problems in Social Housing Estates: A ten-year follow-up study. Mixed methods study of seven social housing estates in Ireland describing and analysing social change in the estates over the ten year period 1998-2008. |
