Biography:
| Michelle Norris is a senior lecturer in social policy. She teaches social policy on the B.Soc.Sc and BSS (Housing and Community Studies) and is currently supervising three doctoral candidates. Her teaching and research interests focus on housing policy and urban regeneration, particularly on: - the management and financing of social housing - the regeneration of social housing estates and inner urban areas - comparative analysis of housing provision in Europe - the Irish house price boom and recent bust and the associated problem of distressed mortgages. She has led over 20 research project on these issues since 2000 and produced 50 publications on the results. She is also co-conveynor of the European Network for Housing Research Working Group on Comparative Housing Policy with Professor Mark Stephens of the University of Glasgow and a member of the international advisory of the International Journal of Housing Policy. As well as working as an academic she has also worked in the local government housing sector and between 2000 and 2005 she was director of the Centre for Housing Research which conducts housing research and policy analysis for central government and the local government in Ireland. In 2011 the Centre was amalgamated into the Housing and Sustainable Homes Agency. Since her appointment to the staff of UCD she has continued to play an important role in advising policy makers. In 2011 she was appointed by an Taoiseach as an independent member of the National Economic and Social Council (NESC) which advises the Irish government on economic, environmental and social policy. In 2012 she was appointed by the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government as chair of the Housing Finance Agency (hfa.ie). The Agency raises finance on international markets which it lends on to local authorities and housing associations for the provision of housing to low income households. |
