Biography:
Dr. Nessa Winston is a college lecturer in Social Policy in the School of Applied Social Science. She previously worked in the Centre for European Economic and Public Affairs and the Social Science Research Centre in UCD and in the Departments of Sociology, at the University of Toronto and NUI, Maynooth. She is a graduate of Social Science in UCD, and has a doctorate in Sociology from the University of Toronto. She joined the School of Applied Social Science in 1995. Her main research interests relate to housing and community issues. For example, she has conducted research on sustainable housing policies and practices in both urban (sustainable urban regeneration) and rural contexts (second and vacant homes; eco-villages). She is also interested in the specific needs of older people and members of different ethnic groups. In 2007 she was awarded a Government of Ireland Fellowship in the Humanities and Social Sciences for research on urban regeneration. She has also been a Visiting Fellow at the Policy Institute at Trinity College Dublin. She directed the Irish strand of an international project on migrants and cultural pluralism, funded by the European Cultural Foundation. She is currently involved in the GINI project, funded under the EU's FP7 programme, focusing on housing and the impacts of growing inequalities. She is a co-founder and member of the Irish Social Policy Association and a member of the European Network for Housing Researchers. |

Teaching Philosophy
| My philosophy is to engage and motivate students as well as facilitate their understanding. I believe that successful teaching and learning requires understanding and meeting the needs of different categories of student. This requires varied teaching inputs and assessments, the extensive use of examples and a significant emphasis on problem-based-learning. |

Enhancement of Teaching
| Feedback on my teaching has been very useful for understanding student learning needs and styles. As soon as I receive feedback, I compile a list of ideas for the following year, implementing as many of them as I can immediately. Feedback has encouraged me to improve course documentation to highlight the link between segments of the curriculum and assessment, as well as providing additional material on the criteria used in assessment. I have learned the importance of communicating module requirements at intervals to reinforce key messages. Feedback has also triggered me to reduce the theoretical content and increase the amount of time spent on evidence from practice. For example, feedback from my early modules on research methods and policy evaluation encouraged me to employ additional examples of both good and bad studies to more adequately explain and illustrate the theoretical components. I experimented with studies on various topics to identify accessible (i.e. not too complex) examples which most engaged students. I have found that examples of bad practice are particularly useful learning tools as students find them relatively easy to critique while examples of high quality research and evaluation are essential for demonstration purposes. Attendance at T & L courses has also been extremely useful for identifying techniques to enhance my teaching, learning and assessment strategies (see T4 for more on this). Experimentation with some of these techniques (e.g. in-class problem-based-learning) has proved effective, even in large lectures, and has helped to increase the participation and more active engagement of students. |
Review and Enhancement of Curriculum
| The BSS was introduced to enable the professional development of housing practitioners. In developing and implementing its curriculum, key challenges in working with the partner organization were to achieve a) an appropriate balance in academic and professional inputs and b) a range of assessment types. The External Examiner provided considerable support for this work. The Higher Diploma enables access to Masters' programmes for those with insufficient credits in Social Policy. Students take modules from the BSocSc and significant changes in that curriculum had considerable implications for the HDip curriculum. Also, additional modules also had to be identified to enable UCD graduate applicants with some Social Policy to meet the credit requirements of the programme. As Director of First Year Social Policy, I was responsible for pilot modularization. This involved (re)designing, implementing, evaluating and revising the pilot curriculum as well as making recommendations for the modularization of later stages in the programme. The relatively low maths scores of Social Science students presents particular challenges in developing their quantitative research skills, a problem which was particularly evident when I taught data analysis at postgraduate level. I have played a lead role in designing and implementing strategies to address this problem in Social Policy (See T4), including: significantly increasing the time dedicated to quantitative methods post modularization; requiring students to use these skills in my stage 2/3 modules; Excel workshops (SPOL10030); skills workshops where students analyzed Irish data from the EU Survey on Income and Living Conditions (SPOL30250). My module on Social policy and the Environment represents a particularly significant contribution to the curriculum given the high level of concern at policy level for these issues. Its development is in keeping with the current University Strategy and my own research trajectory. |
Developing as a Teacher
| An increased understanding of different learning styles and approaches to learning (Marton and Saljo, 1997; Ryan et al, 2004) has encouraged me to employ a greater variety of formats for presentation and assessment. My class materials now include more visual learning aids (graphs & diagrams), relevant popular culture (e.g. a 5 minute clip from a West Wing episode where staff debate how to measure the approval rating of the fictional president); and web-based material such as the Eurostat website. I have also varied the type of assessments I use, appropriate to the level of learning for stage in the programme (Anderson et al, 2001). For example, I now include MCQ examinations, 1 page assignments, posters, and community profiles. Following the work of Halpern (2004) and O'Neill et al (2011), and my attendance at a number of courses on the topic, I have implemented a strong element of problem-based-learning in my semester 1, stage 1 module. In order to facilitate learning, where possible I use both formative and summative assessments in stage 1 modules with prompt feedback available to students. |

| I pioneered two new modules in Irish social policy, introduced a significant element of problem based learning to one of my other BSocSc modules and have had a number of significant achievements in teaching and learning on the analysis of quantitative data among social policy undergraduate students. |
