Biography:
Dr Patricia Kennedy is a Senior Lecturer in Social Policy. Prior to joining UCD in 1995, she was employed in both Ireland and Britain as a youth and community worker. She has written extensively on motherhood and maternity policies in Ireland. Her areas of interest include conceptual and theoretical approaches to social policy, feminist theory and women`s health, women's labour market participation, migration and sexual and reproductive health. Her books include Maternity in Ireland: a Woman-centred Perspective, (2002); Motherhood in Ireland; Creation and Context (editor) (2004). She has co-edited several book in the UCD Press Social Policy Series, including: Contemporary Irish Social Policy. (2005 and 1999); Irish Social Policy in Context (1999); Theorizing Irish Social Policy, (2004) and Ageing and Social Policy (2008). She has undertaken research and published on domestic violence, the needs of refugee and asylum seekers, women¿s health, the Irish Emigrant Chaplaincy Scheme and Mothers who Leave She is a founding member of the European Refugee Fund sponsored EnHera European Network for the Promotion of Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights of Refugees and Asylum Seekers . She is a partner in the NORFACE Evidence Based Policy Network. She is a partner in the Daphne funded research project: Frame of reference in prevention of sexual and gender-based violence against and among young refugees, asylum seekers and unaccompanied minors in the European reception and asylum sector. She represented the National Women's Council of Ireland (NWCI) on the North Eastern Health Board Review Group of the Maternity Services (2001-2002) and on the NEHSE Maternity Services Task Force (2002-2010). She was the Irish representative on COST A13 Transitions in the Labour Market, EU Research Network Gender Advisory Group. She is an assessor for Higher Education and Training Awards Council (HETAC). She is a Director of Smashing Times Theatre Company. She is currently an external examiner for the Waterford Institute of Technology and Carlow College. |
Research Interests
| Research Interests interests include: feminist social policy; pregnancy and maternity policies; motherhood; women's labour market participation; sexual and reproductive health; women's health; domestic violence; migration; refugees and asylum seekers sexual and reproductive health, migration, evidence-based policy. Recent research includes: The Irish Emigrant Chaplaincy Scheme 1957-2007 (funded by the Irish Episcopal Commision for Emigrants); Mothers Who leave: How Could She? a qualitative study of mothers who made a decision to leave children they had parented beyond infancy; the development of a framework for the promotion of sexual and reproductive health rights of refugees and asylum seekers (European Refugee Fund); Frame of reference in prevention of sexual and gender-based violence against and among young refugees, asylum seekers and unaccompanied minors in the European reception and asylum sector (DAPHNE). A comparative study of maternity policies in Ireland and Estonia. |
