Profile

After graduating from UCD with first class honours in 1988, I spent four years working in practice with deBlacam and Meagher, on projects including the Knock Chapel of Reconciliation, the Beckett Theatre in TCD and the CIT library. During this time I also qualifed in professional practice. In 1992, I returned to UCD to begin a research masters on the influence of nationalism on the architectural development of Ireland after independence. I subsequently went on to complete a PhD in 1998 on the politics of urban development in nineteenth-century Dublin. This was the first PhD in Architecture awarded in UCD. Material from the thesis has subsequently been published as papers and book chapters. During this period I taught in UCD and in the Architectural Association in London, eventually becoming a Lecturer in UCD in 1997. I became a permanent College Lecturer in 2001 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2005.

My current research has continued to be informed by my interest in the politics and representation of the city. More recently I have been investigating the relationship between the self and space. Much of the material already presented in papers and essays is currently being incorporated into a forthcoming book entitled 'In Here and Out There: Consciousness and Space in Public and Private'. I am also developing new research on the photographic representation of built space and landscape, which has so far produced a number of papers and publications. I have recently embarked on another strand of research investigating the social and political meanings of space in post-war Europe., beginning with a study of Hans Scharoun's Berlin Philharmonie. Ireland's architecture and its urban environment has been the subject of many essays, reviews, and publications over the years.

My teaching has always encompassed both history and theory and the design studio. Initially in charge of the second year course in twentieth century architecture and the second year design studio, I have more recently been involved in the fourth year and fifth year studios, as well as continuing with lectures in third year and with fourth year history and theory seminars.

Over the years I have been involved in many collaborations with colleagues in other disciplines and in other unversities. I have organised numerous lecture series, conferences, summer field trips, exchanges and exhibitions. Most recently I have been working on teaching and research initiatives with UCD colleagues in the Clinton Institute and the School of Languages, Literatures and Film, and with NCAD.
