Registration

Generous sponsorship provided by the Heritage Council INSTAR, Office of Public Works and the John Hume Institute for Global Irish Studies has helped to ensure that the conference will be accessible to a wide audience of professionals, students and colleagues in related disciplines. The conference fee is €20 (€10 for 1 day) with a reduced rate of €10 for students and unwaged (€5 for 1 day).

Formal registration will be open from 8.30am at the start of both days but those attending must notify us by email so that numbers for catering can be arranged (emap@ucd.ie)

You are welcome to attend the conference if you have not reserved a place but you will be unable to avail of the refreshments and lunches and will be required to pay the registration fee.

Venue

We are pleased to announce that the conference venue will be the prestigious Global Irish Institute (GII) on Belfield campus at University College Dublin (Conference Location). This venue is self-contained and catering will be provided on the premises as part of the registration fee.

Please Note: The only vehicle access to campus on Sundays is from the Stillorgan Road entrance on the N11 and that the Clonskea Road and Owenstown gates are locked. Those seeking accommodation should note that the Montrose Hotel is now closed and links to alternative accommodation can be found below.

Abstract

A conference exploring how the peoples of early medieval north-west Europe, AD 400-1100, organized their dwellings, settlements and landscapes, so as to constitute and represent their social identities of household, community, religion, ethnicity, status, kinship and gender. A range of international speakers will investigate the subject at scales of household, dwellings, localities and regions. Archaeologists will present papers describing recent exciting archaeological discoveries and the stories that they enable us to tell about how people lived together in the past.

International speakers include Helena Hamerow (University of Oxford); Chris Loveluck (University of Nottingham); Martin Carver (University of York, editor Antiquity); Gabor Thomas (University of Reading); Mark Redknap (National Museum of Wales); Chris Lowe (Headland Archaeology); Simon Gilmour (Society of Antiquaries of Scotland); Sally Foster (University of Glasgow, editor Medieval Archaeology); John Barber and Anne Crone (AOC Scotland); David Griffiths (University of Oxford); Aidan O’Sullivan, Jonathan Kinsella and Lorcan Harney (University College Dublin); Finbar McCormick and Thomas Kerr (Queens University Belfast); Michelle Comber (NUI Galway); Paul Stevens (Valerie J. Keeley Ltd); Tomás Ó Carraigáin (University College Cork);Linzi Simpson (Margaret Gowen & Co Ltd); Robert O’Hara (Archer Heritage Ltd), Gareth Davies (University of Nottingham); Matt Seaver (EMAP), Mícheál Ó Droma, amongst several others to be confirmed.

To keep the administrative costs of this conference to a minimum there is no formal organisation of accommodation. However the following links should be helpful:

Please note that the Montrose Hotel - the hotel closest to UCD is shut. The Stillorgan Park Hotel is the next closest and is located on the N11. Mention that you are attending a conference at UCD when booking. The Aircoach from Dublin Airport stops at this Hotel.
