School of Archaeology Transition Year Programme 2009

From Monday 23rd to Friday 27th of March 2009 the School of Archaeology held its first annual Transition Year Programme for second level students. The ten students taking part in the week of archaeological activities came from schools across Dublin as well as counties Kildare and Tipperary. The programme generated considerable interest and successful applicants were restricted to a maximum of two students from each of the schools that submitted applications.

The programme was directed by and Conor McDermott of the School of Archaeology and the students undertook a number of themed projects with members of staff over the week. These included environmental sample processing and analysis with Dr Stephen Davis, conservation of archaeological object with Susannah Kelly and researching historical monuments with Conor McDermott.

Feedback from the students showed the programme was a great success and that they enjoyed the opportunity to work directly with archaeological objects and with archaeologists. The School gratefully acknowledges the hospitality provided by the National Museum of Ireland and UCD School of Classics Museum who hosted visits by the students on Tuesday 24th which were among the highlights of the week.
