Applying for the PhD and MLitt programmes

The School of Archaeology is pleased to receive applications from prospective doctoral and MLitt students.

  • The PhD is a three-year research programme, leading to the production of a thesis.
  • The MLitt is a two-year research programme, leading to the production of a thesis.

Qualifications and Pathways

The School assess each application for entry to the two programmes on its own merits. Candidates may sometimes be interviewed as part of the application process.

  • Candidates for the PhD programme should normally have a good quality Masters-level qualification in Archaeology.
  • Candidates for the MLitt programme should have a good quality level of qualification in their primary degree in Archaeology.
  • MLitt degree candidates can apply to be upgraded to the PhD programme after one year.

Note: Candidates with Masters-level qualifications in discipline or fields outside Archaeology but that are demonstrably related to Archaeology can only apply directly to the MLitt programme in the School of Archaeology. Such candidates can, however, apply after one year for an upgrade to the PhD programme.

Application procedure

Aspiring applicants should first approach either the Head of School or the staff member under whose supervision they hope to carry out their research.
