Research in UCD School of Archaeology
UCD School of Archaeology aims to promote and support excellence in archaeological scholarship in Ireland and beyond. We have a large and vibrant postgraduate and postdoctoral community working on projects spanning Ireland, North America, Atlantic Europe and the Mediterranean. Our staff’s specialisms range from the Mesolithic to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Both staff and students have been very successful in winning scholarships and research grants. We are highly active in research and publication, and participate in archaeology at a national and international level through active involvement in the professional archaeological community and ongoing contributions to international bodies, national government and heritage policies. We have hosted several international archaeological conferences, including TAG in Ireland (2001), WAC-6 (2008), and 14th International Conference of the European Association of Southeast Asian Archaeologists (2012).

These align with national research frameworks and with UCD's major thematic focus on Global Ireland, particularly through the John Hume Institute for Global Irish Studies and the Humanities Institute of Ireland’s (HII) research focus on Culture, Society and Change. There are also two smaller and highly active research groups in the School, predominantly organised by doctoral students, thePrehistoric Discussion Group and Early Medieval and Viking Age Research Group.
