Abstract
The west Wicklow mountains are today a relatively remote and sparsely settled
area. However, the region has been settled since earliest times, and is rich
in archaeological and historical heritage. In particular, the Kings River
Valley has a long-term history of use, both for settlement, and importantly,
as a routeway between the Irish midlands and the south-east coast. The UCD
School of Archaeology has recently established a multidisciplinary landscape
archaeology research project exploring prehistoric, medieval and post-medieval
settlement and landscape in the Kings River valley, Co. Wicklow. The landscapes
at the edge project is specifically designed as an integrated teaching and
research program encompassing undergraduate, postgraduate and other cohorts
of students. The project, which began in 2003, provides students with a region
that embodies much that is fascinating about Ireland’s archaeology
and cultural heritage, set in a upland rural landscape of rugged beauty.
