Aims and Objectives

To investigate past peoples understanding of material culture and the role of technology in social and economic relationships.

To develop standards of artefact-based research and enhance material culture studies as the basis for archaeological interpretation

Abstract

UCD School of Archaeology’s Material Culture research cluster explores how past societies build and re-create social and economic relationships through the production, use and disposal of material culture. Staff members are internationally recognised specialists in material culture from many different periods and in many different materials (e.g. stone, wood, bronze, iron). The School has an Archaeological Conservator who provides professional conservation services for industry. Staff members and research students carry out research on a range of themes within this cluster, and artefact analysis forms a key aspect of several post excavation projects currently based in the School.
