Biographical History

The McDonnell had land and business interests, mainly in Kilrush, County Clare and Limerick, including a public house. Members of the family emigrated in the nineteenth century, mainly to North and South America.

This collection was deposited in the UCD Archives. 

Scope and Content

Letters from family members working in Washington, West Virginia, New Jersey and Chicago, mainly concerning family affairs but including reference to the American civil war, current gold prices and working conditions in those sectors undertaken by the family including domestic and maritime service and gold mining. Other letters from relatives in Argentina, Australia, and Liverpool (1864–1953).

Accounts of the family grocery and public house (1820–80); business correspondence (1872–1902); domestic accounts (1836–63); rental receipts and other property documents (1830–73); notices to tenants to quit and court orders (1837–45).

Family photographs taken in Ireland, the United States and Australia.
