CONTEXT 
Biographical History  

Captain Hans Boehm was assigned by the German High Command to assist Roger Casement while he was in Germany to raise a brigade among Irish prisoners-of-war to return to Ireland and assist the fight for independence. While Casement spoke no German, Boehm was married to an American and had several Irish friends. He assisted Casement significantly until he was sent on a mission, possibly to the USA, in September 1915. He was arrested in British waters off Falmouth in 1917 and interned.

Scope and Content 

Material relating to the attempt by Sir Roger Casement to recruit an Irish brigade from among Irish prisoners of war at Limburg and Zossen, to return to Ireland to assist the campaign for independence. Consists mainly of letters from Casement to Captain Hans Boehm, assigned by the German High Command to assist Casement in the recruitment campaign; and documents relating to the agreement between Casement and the German Foreign Office and to German intentions toward Ireland.
