CONTEXT 
Biographical History  

Seán Gaynor was born in Nenagh, County Tipperary and joined the Volunteers in Tipperary in 1917. He was the leader of the Modreeney ambush and was Commandant of the Tipperary North 1 Brigade. In 1921, he was appointed OC of the 2nd Southern Division. During the Civil War, he took over Birr Barracks despite presence of 1 Eastern Division , who subsequently withdrew. Appointed OC of 3rd Southern Division in 1923.

Scope and Content 

Typescript copy of the statement to the Bureau of Military History (BMH) by Sean Gaynor, Commandant, 1 North Tipperary Brigade, and, from July 1921, Adjutant, 3 Southern Division. Describes the development and organisation of the Volunteers in North Tipperary from his joining early in 1917; battalion and brigade staffs; communications and intelligence; enemy strengths in the area; his meeting with Michael Collins; attacks on Borrisokane and Rearcross Royal Irish Constabulary stations, and other engagements and ambushes, particularly the activities of 1 Brigade Active Service Unit.
