CONTEXT 
Administrative history  

The Herbert family of Muckross were descended from the Earls of Pembroke and retained extensive connections with the aristocracy. In the two hundred and fifty years they were associated with Muckross, members of the family married into the Brownes, Viscounts of Kenmare; the Whites, Earls of Bantry; the Cuffes, Earls of Desart; and had a close connection with the Butlers, Earls of Ormonde. The family produced a number of High Sheriffs of the county and members of parliament for both Irish and Westminster seats. Henry Arthur Herbert the second became Chief Secretary for Ireland, 1857–58.

Archival history
The Herbert papers are part of the archives of the firm of Franks & Oulton, solicitors, 21 Lower Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin, acquired in 1971. The parent collection is being listed on the basis of individual clients, usually landed families.

Scope and Content 

Papers of the Herbert family, Muckross, County Kerry, particularly Henry Arthur Herbert, including deeds and other title documents, accounts, bills of complaint, pleas and answers, and court orders arising from a dispute over the title to lands occupied by the Herberts, 1789–1827. Material relating to an attempt by Henry Arthur Herbert to recover monies due to him from Walter, Earl of Ormond, on foot of a 1779 agreement, 1813–38; and to routine estate affairs, 1815–18.
