Account by McCann from a later period (1939) of his war
of independence experience with particular reference to manoeuvres,
training and ambushes on enemy forces in the Donegal and Derry areas
including attacks on the R.I.C. at Rampart, near Dungloe railway
station, November 1919, in Derry, March 1920, and at Dungloe, July 1920;
the ambush of a British troop train at Crolly, January 1921; attacks on
barracks at Falcarragh, March 1921, and Glenties, April 1921; with
constant reference to Peadar O’Donnell and including lists of
volunteers taking part and diagrams of each action. Includes an account
of the attempted round-up by British forces in West Donegal, May 1921;
of a training camp at Breenagh directed by
Todd
Andrews after the Truce;
of the establishment of anti-Treaty headquarters and his arrest in
Glenties in June 1922, transfer to Newbridge from where he escaped in
October; his eventual return to Derry in early 1924, where he was
appointed Officer Commanding, Derry Brigade and continued to organize.
