CONTEXT
Biographical History

The O’Briens of Dromoland are direct descendants of Brien Boru, the last High King of Ireland (d.1014). Originally a Dalcassian clan, known as the Ui Toirdealbhaigh, they became prominent with the rise of Brien and took his name as their surname after his death. The O’Brien sept had three main branches: the Earls and Marquises of Thomond, the Barons and Earls of Inchiquin and the Viscounts of Clare. The Barons Inchiquin moved to Dromoland Castle in the seventeenth century and remained there until 1962, when it was refurbished as a hotel. The line continues to the present day.
