Administrative history
The Synnots acquired
large estates in Westmeath in the 18th century, mainly
through the marriage in 1777 of Mark Synott (d.1789) to Susanna
Nugent. The marriage of Mark Seton Synnot (d.1890) to his first
cousin Anne Jane Synnot ensured that the estates stayed within the
family. The failure of their only son, also Mark, to produce an
heir, led to the subdivision of the estates among their six daughters.
Archival history
The Synnot and Hart-Synnot
family papers are part of the archives of the firm of Franks &
Oulton, solicitors, 21 Lower Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin, acquired
in 1971. The parent collection is being listed on the basis of individual
client, usually landed families.
