UCD remains the only university in Ireland providing a recognised course for professional archivists: the Higher Diploma in Archival Studies. This course was first offered in 1972/3 and was the cornerstone in the foundation of the Archives Department. It was also a catylst in the Departments acquisitions policy. Some of the earliest collections of archives acquired by the Department were teaching collections to provide a practical infrastructure for and not just theory-based professional education. The Higher Diploma in Archival Studies is recognised by the Society of Archivists (UK and Ireland). The Archives Department also provides modules on archives within other postgraduate courses in UCD and contributes to short courses for groups of specialist archivists. It is committed to professional development and in recent years has organised courses on electronic records and archives, and on Encoded Archival Description. In 1998 it hosted an international symposium on archives to mark 25 years of professional education in the Archives Department. |
