A project to re-house the National Library's collection of Ordnance Survey maps commenced on 1 February 2002. This involves removing maps from their existing bindings, many of which are in very poor condition, and re-housing them in folders. This will bring about a considerable improvement in their storage conditions and their long-term preservation, and will make it easier for readers to consult individual map sheets in the future.

In order to enable this work to be carried out, Ordnance Survey maps will gradually be withdrawn from public circulation. The first maps to be withdrawn are maps with the call numbers 19.A.1–19.C.22, i.e. Ordnance Survey 6'' maps dating from 1891–1938; these will be unavailable from 1 February 2002 until further notice. Ordnance Survey maps relating to the City and County of Dublin, will be withdrawn next. The National Library would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
