A New Life for Wicklow County Archive?

Mobile shelving in the new Wicklow County Archives strongroom
Previously housed in the Courthouse in Wicklow town, the wonderful collections of Wicklow County Archive are now enjoying a well-deserved rest. The archives were moved in August to the County Council buildings, in more than 280m˛ of space where mobile shelving has been installed to ensure their preservation, management, care and proper listing.

Knowing the quality of Wicklow archives and the rarity of some documents, the previously inadequate storage conditions, and the amount of work that previous archivists put in to securing the archives, it is a particular pleasure for me, the current archivist in Wicklow, to make the announcement.

Although the new room was at an advanced stage in the building process when I became aware of its existence, I was made a part of the decision-making process concerning the demands of archive storage and the supervision of the move of the archives from the courthouse to the new room.

Although Wicklow Authority members are still talking of a ‘temporary solution’, this progress should be seen as a symbol of hope for all archivists in search for accommodation for their archives.
