The RCB Library has published the twelfth volume in its parish register series - the Register of the cathedral of St Fin Barre, Cork, 1753-1804, which has been edited by the Cork historian, Dr. Alicia St Leger.

The original registers of St, Fin Barre’s were destroyed in the fire in the Public Record Office of Ireland in 1922

but fortunately they had been transcribed by the noted Cork antiquary and Librarian of Queen’s College, Cork, Richard Caulfield (1823-87). It is his transcript which is now published in one volume for the first time.

The editor has written a useful introduction to the entries of baptisms, marriage and burials and there are indexes to people and occupations which are the work of the Dublin indexer, Helen Litton. The register reflects something of the life of Cork in a period of change when the population was growing, the city expanding beyond the medieval core and the local economy developing. It should be of interest to archivists, genealogists and local historians.

Available from St Fin Barre’s cathedral shop and the RCB Library, Braemor Park, Churchtown, Dublin 14 (library@ireland.anglican.org).
