I am a fisheries scientist whose research focusses on the biology, ecology and evolution of marine fishes, particularly elasmobranchs and small pelagic species. These interests can be broadly divided into two complementary areas; Fisheries and Biodiversity & Conservation. I am particularly interested in environmental and anthropogenic effects on life-history characteristics, behaviour and population dynamics. My research utilises an extensive range of laboratory and field skills to investigate these topics, including anatomical, histological and genetic techniques and also conventional and electronic tagging. I am also increasingly interested in pursuing the incorporation of the results of my research into effective fisheries management and conservation strategies and policy.

These research interests have been shaped by my education and career experiences to date, including an undergraduate degree in Zoology, postgraduate and postdoctorate training in Marine and Fisheries Ecology and also working closely with industry. My PhD research focussed on the life-history and population biology of the starry smooth-hound shark, Mustelus asterias, which provided a robust foundation in fisheries biology and ecology. This was applied and developed in a commercial context during my first postdoctoral fellowship, at the Marine Institute, Galway, which focussed on the new boarfish (Capros aper) fishery and the development of a sound scientific basis for assessment and management. This provided the opportunity to work closely with both industry focussed researchers and the fishing industry itself and to identify research needs in this area. Fish population genetics and stock identification was one of these areas.

Since 2013 I have been a member of Dr. Jens Carlsson's molecular ecology research group at UCD, where I initially studied the population genetics of boarfish on an IRC Postdocotral Fellowship. I am currently a UCD Research Fellow and am involved in a number of studies concerning the development of stock identification tools for pelagic species, including Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) and horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus).
