School Prizes
Françoise Henry Memorial Prizes
These two prizes were established in 1988 to mark the contribution of the late Dr. Françoise Henry, both as a teacher and as an historian of Irish art. Dr. Henry founded the Department of the History of Art in the College and for many years gave the course of public lectures on the History of European Painting associated with the Purser-Griffith Scholarships. The prizes will be awarded annually to the undergraduate students who take first and second place respectively in the Art History Level 1 examinations, provided a standard of at least Second Class Honours is attained.
Donal Byrne Memorial Prize
This prize was established in recognition of the achievement of Dr. Donal Byrne, a graduate of the College and a distinguished historian of medieval art. Dr. Byrne, who died in 1988, bequeathed his collection of books to the Françoise Henry Reading Room in the School of the History of Art. The prize, to be used for the purchase of books, will be awarded annually to the undergraduate student who takes first place in the History of Art Level 2 Examinations, provided a standard of at least Second Class Honours, Grade 1 is attained.
Michael McCarthy Medal
This medal was established to mark the retirement of Professor Michael McCarthy, Chair of the Department from 1994-2004. Among his achievements was the establishment and direction of a Taught MA in European and Irish architectural history. His commitment to post-graduate students is recorded in this medal which is awarded annually to the candidate, majoring in Art History, who obtains obtains first place in the MA Degree in History of Art by examination and thesis.

Other Awards
National and International Awards
Current and past students have been the recipients of various awards including Government of Ireland Doctoral and Post-Doctoral Fellowships, IRCHSS scholarships, Thomas Damann Junior Memorial Fellowships and of the Sotheby Jubilee Fellowships. The School receives notice of regular and exceptional award opportunities for students in the History of Art and encourages student application. Notices are posted on the School bulletin board promptly and further details are available from the School Administrator.
UCD Scholarships
UCD awards a range of scholarships to incoming students. Some are based on academic achievement; others acknowledge sporting and artistic talent or are specifically used to encourage students who may not otherwise attend university. In addition, there are other undergraduate awards, medals and prizes, which are awarded, in later years on the basis of outstanding performance and/or results in the previous year's examinations.
