UCD School of Art History & Cultural Policy

Scoil Stair na hEalaíne agus an Pholasaí Chultúrtha UCD

UCD School of Art History and Cultural Policy comprises a full course of undergraduate studies in Art History within the BA programme for both day and modular students and postgraduate studies at all levels in Art History and in Cultural Policy and Arts Management.

There are eight permanent teaching and supervising staff, complemented by visiting lecturers, the slide curator and the School administrators. Committed to high standards of teaching and research, the School offers students a stimulating and dynamic curriculum along with serious and renowned expertise in postgraduate direction and supervision. Study tours form part of the School programming and full advantage is taken of opportunities to study the various collections of art in Ireland.

Art History is concerned with visual culture: with painting, sculpture, architecture and the decorative arts. Students are encouraged to develop both their visual and their intellectual skills. The inherent interdisciplinarity of the subject enables interesting interconnections with a broad range of other Arts subjects. Prior study of the subject is not necessary for entry to level 1 Art History.

The School has a strong postgraduate programme. Incorporating taught and research possibilities, studies can be taken at MA, MLitt and PhD level in both Art History and in Cultural Policy and Arts Management. While cultural policy of its nature forms part of Art History studies at all levels, the postgraduate programme in Cultural Policy and Arts Management is not confined to the visual arts, but addresses the broad spectrum of artistic activity.
