Welcome to UCD School of Art History and Cultural Policy.
UCD School of Art History and Cultural Policy is the largest academic department for the study of Art History in Ireland. It offers over thirty modules to undergraduates in the day and evening programmes. Additionally we provide two taught master programmes in Art History, and Cultural Policy and Arts Management. The latter provides professional training for leaders in cultural organisations and has an international reputation for the quality and rigour of its instruction. We also have a vibrant community of research students working towards the award of MLitt or PhD in both Art History, and Cultural Policy and Arts Management. Expert supervision can be offered in a range of areas ranging from the world of classical antiquity to contemporary European and American architecture, as well as all aspects of Irish art and architecture.
The School provides a stimulating environment for the study of Art History. There are eight permanent teaching and supervising staff, who are committed to high standards of teaching and research. Emphasis is placed on a first-hand interaction with art and architecture and the School makes regular use of Dublin’s museums and galleries, in addition to organising trips abroad. As well as encouraging visual analysis of individual works, the teaching of Art History at UCD also involves exposure to broader historical processes and to theoretical issues. Art History is a dynamic, ever-changing discipline that is intrinsically inter-disciplinary in nature and this makes it a perfect subject choice at university level.
