Biography:
Dr Lynda Mulvin has a specialist background and interest in classical antiquity and architectural history. Her expertise in these areas informs her core undergraduate courses on classical and medieval art and architecture as well as her thematic M.A courses. She is the Director of the MA in Art History and her present Masters module course is Istanbul: Palimpsest city. She also leads the field trip to Istanbul to examine the art and architecture of the city. Dr Mulvin's BA undergraduate degree was a two subject moderatorship in the History of Art and Classics from Trinity College, Dublin (1987). Dr Mulvin is a also post-graduate of the Katholiëke Universitat Leuven, Belgium (1990) where she was awarded la plus grande distinction for her M.Arch Sc. in Conservation. She returned to the School of Classics to complete a Phd (1999), on the architecture of the late Roman villa in the Danube-Balkan region, which was published in 2002 as a research monograph. She continues to participate in archaeological work and excavations, for example recently she acts as Roman expert on the UCD School of Classics survey of the Livatho valley in Kephalonia, Greece, and as an expert contributor to the assessment of Romano-Hibernian material in ongoing investigations and excavations in Ireland including Knowth. A revised study of the Knowth material in which she has a written chapter was published by the Royal Irish Academy in June 2012. Dr Mulvin completed a catalogue of the collection of Roman & Byzantine Antiquities at the National Museum of Ireland which culminated in a permanent NMI exhibition on the subject of Roman life and the monograph, Roman and Byzantine Antiquities in the National Museum of Ireland - A Select Catalogue (2006). In addition, as a result of a President's Research Award (2005) she is working towards a series of articles on certain important unpublished drawings of the neoclassical British architect, C.R. Cockerell, that were made by him on his grand tour of Ionian Antiquities between 1810 and 1817. Arising out of this research she convened the successful international conference (May 2009) titled 'The Fusion of Neoclassical Principles: scholars, artists, architects, builders and designers in the neoclassical period' for which she was awarded a grant from the Paul Mellon Centre studies for the study of British art and the UCD research Strand on Material Culture which was published in December 2011 as a volume of essays, book title Fusion of Neo-classical Principles (Wordwell, Dublin, 2011). Dr Mulvin recently organised a symposium entitled 'Orientalism and Anglo-Irish scholarship 1740-1810 in the Gennadius Library, Athens. The fruits of this symposium were written as a series of essays which have just been published as a New Griffon series of the Gennadius Library, American School of Classical Studies Athens in July 2012 book title 'Culture of Translation: British and Irish Scholarship in the Gennadius Library Athens 1740-1840. She was recently made a Member of the Board of the Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies at Athens. She is an active member of ICOMOS and IPCRA and works to solve practical conservation problems relating to stone decay on eighteenth and nineteenth century buildings in Dublin. Dr Mulvin's other current research is the development of a joint research project on the Franciscans in Connaught, together with Gosia D'Aughton UCC and Edel Bhreathnach of the Michael O' Cleirigh Institute, UCD. It is intended that this research, to include an appraisal of the historical significance of Franciscan architecture and material culture in this region, will be published in due course.

Enhancement of Teaching
I aim to foster a culture where teaching and learning is highly valued resulting in good practice being a constant feature and ensuring through annual review that is implemented. I implement four pillars of development: enquiry, discussion, review and future planning which I believe introduces a cycle of evidence-informed, practice based learning, which strives for continuous improvement. I believe that teaching enhancement is a necessary exercise driven by the process of review and assessment of the levels of interaction between student and teacher, and also between students and their peers. In terms of student interaction, the levels of clarity, the range of understanding and engagement should also be monitored to enable a realistic realisation of milestones and deliverables to occur. The module should progress equally through several stages of learning comprehension and development, to ensure essential understanding and the student assessments should reflect the ability to act on these developing levels of comprehension. This constant monitoring of achievements and goals ensures that there is alignment between ability, teaching, learning and these achievable targets.
Review and Enhancement of Curriculum
I aim to foster a culture where teaching and learning is highly valued resulting in good practice implemented. My teaching has been peer-observed and the valuable feedback has ensured I have reflected on my teaching and have improved on the planning and delivery of lectures. There is a dialectical relationship between my teaching and research with my research shaping the form of my classes and my teaching informing my approach to research in the manner in which I present it. I am Director of the MA in Art History since 2009. I believe in the importance of mentoring students and in the importance of reviewing existing curriculum structures. I have carried out a restructuring and review of MA core modules and teaching practices, to ensure a better quality teaching and learning experience. Each of my module is constantly updated with more emphasis introduced on presentation skills and on activities where the student has to engage in a subject, to integrate a work plan and present artistic material on a painting, an object or a building to their peer-group and then write up the results as an essay. This creates organised assessments of activities and also encourages merging of disciplines from art to material and visual culture studies, thereby enriching the overall student experience. The incorporation of small group techniques and learning exercises is a positive change and assessments have adjusted to improve the outcome, experience and results for the student.
Developing as a Teacher
To ensure personal growth and development as a teacher, I have attended teaching development courses in small-group learning skills, in delivering positive feedback, in report writing and in project management. These courses help build personal development and provide indicators for the enhancement of my teaching skills and my learning and development opportunities. I am concerned to ensure that in each of my taught modules, there is a development trajectory, where learning outcomes emphasise knowledge integration and alignment, the development of critical, independent and original thinking, and that students are encouraged to foster peer-learning and group-work skills. The engagement with, and support of the undergraduate student learning experience, includes the development and implementation of a range of student learning and student assessment procedures, and the introduction of a revised undergraduate curriculum. I have implemented and revised the MA in Art History curriculum in 2011-12. These revisions were informed by analysis of student feedback to streamline modules, and to introduce, where possible, further shared teaching practices with other module co-ordinators and participation in other group learning activities and discussion forum.
Innovation & Leadership
I have a reputation for leading dynamic, Art History study visits abroad, where I bring alive to students the range of the visual and material aspects of art history and cultural policy in context. I wish to continue this level of engagement with students and to impart a solid and good education, to discover that learning is fun and furthermore to train students to become leaders and to discover their own potential and their own fields of interest.
