Stage 1 Art History

Dealing with visual culture - with painting, sculpture, architecture, drawing, photography, performance and the decorative arts - Art History is a stimulating and richly rewarding subject.  Its aim is to interpret the art of different ages, to assess its meaning, development, context and quality and to stimulate and sharpen visual acuity.  The art historian deals with images and patterns; with systems of formal analysis such as composition, style or iconography; with technical material; with patronage and social context; with conceptual and historical analysis; and obviously, with history.

Students electing to study Art History will acquire a comprehensive understanding of the various epochs of art-making, and be introduced to the key debates and issues that have resonated throughout the history of art from antiquity to the present day.

There are four lecture modules offered at Stage 1, each worth 5 credits.
  • Tools of Art History
  • European Art 1: Giotto to Michelangelo
  • European Art 2: Caravaggio to Turner
  • Art & the Modern World: Impressionism, Independence & Intransigence in the 19th century

A document detailing the lecture modules for Stage 1 Art History is available to download - Course Brochure [1st Year (Stage 1)]

Students wishing to progress with art history as a major, minor or joint major at Stage 2 are required to take Tools of Art History (AH10040).

All Stage 1 modules require students to attend 2 lectures per week.  European Art 1 & 2 modules also offer smaller group learning in the form of supportive tutorials. These compulsory classes offer a valuable opportunity to discuss the material covered in lectures.
