Educational Technology
The educational technology team in the UCD Audio Visual Centre design,
develop and deploy media and technology to support teaching, learning
and research in the university. We combine pedagogical knowledge with
technical skills to deliver cost-effective educational resources.
Strategic Initiatives
The AVC has received funding under the Higher Education Authority's Strategic Initiatives
programme for an action research project on elearning in the UCD School
of Medicine and Medical Science. Its aims were to investigate
elearning, make recommendations and to develop a model of best
practice. The project was peer-reviewed by the University of Edinburgh.
Outputs include a report on elearning, templates for elearning,
immunology animations, workshops on content development and a DVD on
obstetrics.

Educational Technology & eLearning
The AVC and UCD Pathology designed and developed the Pathology
etutorial. This is an online case study of colorectal cancer, where a
medical student has to perform a simulated consultation and examination
of a virtual patient with the goal of diagnosing and treating their
illness. The etutorial includes an online notepad where the students
can record their reflections and observations. Development was
part-funded by a President's Teaching Grant.
As part of the strategic initiative in elearning, the AVC has developed templates to help lecturers create media-rich interactive elearning. These templates allow lecturers to combine images, video and animation with a variety of question types. Flash Companion converts the template content into web pages, which can be uploaded to Blackboard. The AVC provides courses in design for online learning and in the use of these templates.
