UCD School of Biology & Environmental Science

Scoil na BitheolaĆochta agus na hEolaĆochta Comhshaoil UCD

Welcome to SBES Graduate Studies

The UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science provides an academic and intellectual environment that fosters the development of world-class multidisciplinary teaching and research. It is part of a new UCD that is developing as a research-intensive university, advancing knowledge through cutting-edge research. Graduate students are central to these activities. Their work represents a large proportion of the research in the School, and the training and experiences offered by the School are designed to further the development of their future careers.

The School offers Graduate Research Opportunities within internationally recognised research groups that lead to Masters and Doctoral degrees. Our research focuses on four interlinked thematic areas: ecosystem function and sustainable resource managment, evolution and population biology, plant sciences and cell and molecular biology.

The School also provides a range of Graduate Taught Programmes at certificate, diploma and degree level.

Career Prospects

The highly diverse nature of the School means that a very wide choice of employment is potentially available to our graduates.

Many PhD graduates enter academia, often after a period as postdoctoral research here or in other universities. Recent graduates have obtained lectureships in Ireland, England, Northern Ireland, Japan and New Zealand.

Many others are now employed in research institutes, including Teagasc in Ireland, and also in the US, Australia, England, France, Switzerland, Pakistan, Quatar and Iran.

Several have become advisors or administrators in Irish state or semi-state organisations such as the Department of Agriculture, the Department of the Environment, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Marine Institute, the Food Safety Authority, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Fisheries Boards, County Councils and in equivalent institutions in other countries.

Employers are well represented in the commercial world, and recent graduates work for companies in agriculture, biotechnology, environmental consultancy, food science, diagnostics and the pharmaceutical industry.
