The Bioresources Research Centre (BRC) at University College Dublin (UCD) focuses on the delivery of a research and development programme that is supportive of the Irish Government's Smart Green Economy strategy.

Smart Systems Unit

The Centre addresses sustainability within the agri-food and bioresources sectors, and places particular emphasis on the delivery of innovative solutions to the main challenges facing these sectors. Particular emphasis is placed on addressing the complete food chain (from farm to table), an inherent part of which is the food v. fuel challenge facing the agri-food sector; in this context, the BRC aims to deliver innovative solutions in the biomass-to-energy domain.

The BRC's current team comprises 6 core and 3 affiliated academic staff, 51 contract researchers (5 senior researchers/postdocs, 3 Parsons Researchers), 4 Marie Curie Fellows, 25 PhDs, 14 Masters) and 1.5 technicians. The Centre has led and participated in a wide range of research projects, at national and international levels. Its network of ongoing research projects spans 53 institutions / organisations in 33 countries, worldwide. Its philosophy is to conduct top quality research and to "benchmark" its work through its publication in internationally renowned peer-reviewed research journals and at major international conferences.

Since its inception, the BRC has published in excess of 150 such papers, and has received several "best paper" awards. Its current research portfolio spans the agri-food and bioresources areas and comprises 24 research projects, including sustainable bioresource utilisation, animal biometrics, food chain traceability, biomass-to-energy, wood harvesting, environmental impact of agri-food production systems, peatland utilisation, carbon sequestration, risk assessment and a range of related topics.

Charles Parsons Energy Research is the Centre's flagship research and development programme in the biomass-to-energy domain.
