Club Leabhar Belfield aims to encourage those with a reasonable knowledge of the language to read in Irish. The club is organised in association with the James Joyce Library, and with the help of a faciltator, Dr Liam Mac Amhlaigh. Podcasts and videos on each month’s book as well as an interactive forum can be accessed via www.clubleabhar.com.

The focus is on novels and short-story collections for the most part, but books from other genres (poetry and travel books, for example) are discussed from time to time. It is our policy to avoid books which contain very advanced or complex language. There will be a mix of newly-published books and classics that are still in print.

Coolbáire (CIC - Pádraig Standún), L'Attaque (Cló Mercier - Eoghan Ó Tuairisc), Faye (LeabhairCOMHAR - Meadhbh Ní Eadhra), Nuair a Stadann an Ceol (LeabhairCOMHAR - Marie Whelton) and Scáil an Phríosúin (CIC- Anna Heussaff) were among some of the books discussed last semester. Author Anna Heussaff was a guest speaker at the book club on 15 November 2017. Refreshments are served at these guest lectures and students, staff and members of the public are welcome.

Clé-deas: Ashling Harteveld, Assistant Irish Language Administrator, Anna Heussaff, author, Liam Mac Amhlaigh, book club facilitator, Alswyn Ní Aonghusa - Ní Dhúill, Third Level Coordinator, Conradh na Gaeilge, Glór na nGael & USI

The club meets every Wednesday, 5.45pm-6.45pm, commencing 31 January 2018. Books are available via the Bord na Gaeilge Office. Here is the book list for for this semester: An Litir (Leabhar Breac - Liam Mac Cóil), Aiséirí (Cois Life - Alex Hijmans), Cathair an Tíogair (LeabhairCOMHAR - Feargal Ó Dubhghaill), Conaire Mór (Leabhar Breac - Diarmuid Johnson), and Daideo (Cois Life - Áine Ní Ghlinn). Author Áine Ní Ghlinn will be a guest speaker at the final session of the Book Club on 7 March 2018.

The book club takes place in the James Joyce Library, therefore members of the public should contact Ashling Harteveld (ranganna.gaeilge@ucd.ie) at least one week prior to the start of the book club to arrange a library card. There is a registration fee of €10 for the book club and registration is now open for semester 2.
