About Energy

UCD typically uses about 65GWh of energy each year – the equivalent of about 3000 houses! Belfield accounts for almost 90% of usage, with Blackrock, Lyons Estate and Newman House making up the balance.

In 2009 the total cost of energy used in UCD buildings was €5million. Electricity accounts for 60% of cost, with gas at 35% and wood pellets at 5%.

Approx 30% of Belfield's electricity is generated on site in the Belfield Combined Heat & Power (CHP) plant. With CHP the heat which is a byproduct of electricity generation is used in buildings rather than being discarded, as happens with conventional power stations. Because of this, CHP results in lower CO2 emissions – in the case of Belfield the reduction is approx 2000 tonnes per annum.
