UCD Campus Emergency Protocol


A MAJOR CAMPUS EMERGENCY is defined as an event on site that has the potential to impact on the health and safety of a significant number of individuals and/or on the physical infrastructure of the campus.

In the event of a major emergency on campus, you will be notified via some or all of the following: email, campus voicemail, web bulletin, UCD Services staff or emergency personnel. UCD staff and students are requested to remain calm and adhere to the following protocol.

Shelter

Seek shelter in the building nearest to you, the obvious exception being if the fire alarm is ringing in that building. In the case of a fire alarm you are requested to follow standard evacuation procedures, going to the designated assembly areas, unless instructed to do otherwise.

Shut

Shut and lock, where possible, doors and windows.

Listen

Listen for information updates via campus voicemail message and online via the UCD homepage which will become a dedicated channel in the event of an emergency.

Upon receiving a call, Campus Services will arrange, if appropriate, for the emergency services to be contacted, and ensure they are speedily escorted to the incident and that the necessary UCD response is activated.

UCD is continually revising and updating the Campus Emergency Response Plan in conjunction with An Garda Síochána and other emergency services. 

 

Personal safety on campus

UCD is a large campus with most campus facilities at its core, you should always be aware of personal security and safety issues. The success of the UCD Unicare Programme depends on your cooperation as a member of the UCD community.

You are encouraged to adopt behaviours that reinforce personal security such as:

  • Do not display cash openly, especially when leaving an ATM machine
  • Reporting any suspicious behaviour
  • Designate a sober ‘minder’ on a night out, don’t leave anyone behind
  • Avoid using headphones while walking
  • Avoid low lit areas
  • Walk in groups
  • Use personal alarms
  • Avail of the Unicare walking alone programme

 

Personal Property

Take it with you. Never leave your personal property unattended. It may be bothersome to carry everything, everywhere, but it's worth it if it means not having to replace costly items.

Medical Emergency

What to do in case of a medical emergency
In the case of a medical emergency on campus, call the 24-hour emergency line at ext. 7999 (or 01 716 7999), or pick up a red emergency telephone.  UCD Services will then contact the emergency services, and ensure that the relevant traffic barriers are raised for an ambulance.  They will also send a patrol jeep to meet the ambulance at the campus entrance and guide it to its destination.

When reporting a medical emergency to UCD Services, make sure to provide the following information:

  • Exact location of incident.
  • Detailed description of condition of medical victim.
  • Description of any incident that resulted in the medical emergency.
  • Your name.
  • Your contact number.

First Aid and A.E.D. training can be organized through the Safety Office

 

Lost and Found

With a population of 30,000 at its peak it is not surprising that every day items are lost or found on campus. UCD Buildings and Services operates a Lost and Found service to help reunite lost property with its owner.

If you have lost anything always report it to UCD Services as it may have been handed in. If you find anything around campus, please, bring it to the Campus Services Desk at the agriculture building, or Blackrock services desk

Alternatively you may check the UCD Notice Board as people may post their informations there.

In Case of Emergency (ICE)

In Case of Emergency (ICE) is a program that enables first responders, such as paramedics, fire-fighters, and police officers, to identify victims and contact their next of kin to obtain important medical information.

The ICE programme promoted by paramedics encourages people to enter emergency contacts in their mobile phone address book under the name "ICE". Alternately, a person can list multiple emergency contacts as "ICE1", "ICE2", etc.

ICE makes it far easier to call next-of-kin in the unfortunate event of a medical crisis and reduces needless delays.

To get out the best out of ICE:

  • Make sure the person whose name and number you are giving has agreed to be your ICE partner
  • Make sure your ICE partner has a list of people they should contact on your behalf - including your place of work
  • Enter “ICE mum” or “ICE husband” followed by the number to list more than one emergency contact or use ICE1, ICE2 etc.

Pick up an ICE card at the Campus Services Desk or the Blackrock Services Desk.

 

Campus Garda Office

The Campus Garda Office is located at Campus Services Agriculture Building. The office is opened on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 1.00pm – 2.00pm.

A Community Garda will be happy to answer queries and to help process forms such as applications for passports, driving licences, holiday visas, etc.
