Mobile Phones

It is quite common for mobile phones to be mislaid or lost on campus. The following tips and hints might help.

  • Use your phone's security lock code, if it has one
  • Do not attract attention to your phone when you are carrying or using it in the street (particularly high value models such as Apple iphone)
  • Keep your phone out of sight when not in use
  • Regularly back up your phones memory to another device (so that contact details or photos are not lost)
  • Register your IMEI number with your network operator
  • Inform your service provider if your phone is stolen or lost

IMEI Number

The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number is on all GSM and UMTS mobile phones, commonly found in Europe, Asia, Africa and increasingly in America.
Mobile phone companies can use the number to identify valid subscribers and the type of equipment used. The carrier could thus use the number to remotely disable the phone in the event it is stolen or reported lost.
To find your IMEI number:

  1. Ensure your phone is powered on.
  2. Return to the "idle" screen, or your "desktop". If you were in the middle of a call, end it, and clear any numbers you pressed while making that call.
  3. Press the following keys one by one: * # 0 6 #
  4. As you press on the last #, a number will appear with the title, IMEI number, or similar.
